SENTEBALE ANNOUNCES SOTHEBY’S ONLINE BENEFIT AUCTION
The charity, which serves young people in Lesotho and Botswana, was co-founded in 2006 by Prince
Harry and Prince Seeiso
NEW YORK, NY, APRIL 5, 2024 - The first-ever Sentebale Benefit Auction, hosted by Sotheby’s, is live
today for viewing, with bidding opening on April 11 at 11am ET for two weeks only. The auction unites a
dynamic group of internationally acclaimed artists, including four generations of African talent, whose
works reflect themes of resilience, identity, heritage, and power. Through their unique styles and
creative expressions, these artists collectively echo Sentebale's mission to work with vulnerable children,
young people and their communities to create sustainable solutions that address issues of health, wealth
inequity and climate resilience in Southern Africa.
This auction features artists ranging in age from 30 to 98, including Outtara Watts whose multimedia
paintings incorporate African and Western aesthetics, depicting themes of spirituality and
modernity; Yinka Shonibare CBE, renowned for his exploration of colonialism, stereotypes and
globalization; Derrick Adams and his multimedia explorations of identity; Nelson Makamo’s vibrant
portraiture of African youth; Sedireng Mothibatsela of Botswana and her minimalist, emotive works;
Camila Falquez with her fashion and portrait photography that honors the contemporary spectrum of
social and gender diversity; and Meshu Mokitimi, the Lesotho-born artist who at 98 years-old continues
to create landscape and portraiture work representing his heritage.
Proceeds will support the work of Sentebale, relating to: the care of young people living with HIV/AIDS,
addressing mental health issues, career exploration and entrepreneurship, critical life skills and
advocacy; and offering vocational training and education opportunities. Most recently, Sentebale has
expanded into the regeneration of landscapes to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change on the
natural resources that communities rely on for survival.
"At the intersection of this incredible roster of artists, is a reminder of the resilience, identity, and power
we strive to instill in those we serve, echoing the very essence of 'forget-me-not' which Sentebale means
in Sesotho. We are so honoured that these artists are contributing their work in support of ours, as we
engage with children, young people and their communities in Lesotho and Botswana in forging
sustainable solutions for a brighter, more inclusive future," says Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex and
Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, Co-Founding Patrons of Sentebale.
Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho co-founded Sentebale in 2006 as a
response to the needs of children and young people in Lesotho. Sentebale was driven out a shared love
for the country, and in honor of the work of their late mothers. Sentebale symbolizes the organization’s
core pledge, to never forget and always advocate for the most vulnerable amongst us.
"Curating this extraordinary array of artists, spanning from emerging talents poised for global acclaim to
established stars, fills us with immense joy," says Dr Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair of Sentebale. "The
fusion of art and philanthropy not only enriches our souls but also fuels our ongoing efforts, which have
already transformed the lives of countless children and youth. It's a personal joy for me to witness the
convergence of artistic brilliance and the relentless pursuit of uplifting the potential of our youth, especially
in countries I hold dear from my upbringing in Southern Africa.”
“Sotheby’s is both honoured and delighted to partner with Sentebale for their inaugural benefit auction.
As global market leaders for African art and artists, we are committed to the African continent, and
commend Sentebale for their impactful and transformative efforts in southern Africa. This auction
provides collectors with the chance to acquire a diverse array of exceptional artworks, ranging from
those by well-established international artists to promising emerging talents, all while contributing to this
remarkable cause,” says Hannah O’Leary, Senior Director, Head of Modern & Contemporary African Art
at Sotheby’s.
The auction also celebrates the work of Aboudia, Sam Cox aka Mr Doodle, Kareem-Anthony Ferreira,
Miranda Forrester, Tadaaki Kuwayama, Chéri Samba, Tariku Shiferaw, and more.

About Sentebale
Sentebale works with children and young people and their communities to create sustainable solutions
that address issues of health, wealth inequity, and climate resilience in the Southern African countries of
Lesotho and Botswana. The organisation was founded by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex and Prince
Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 as a response to the needs of children and young people in Lesotho, driven by
their shared love for the country, and in honour of their mothers. The name means ‘forget-me-not’ in
the Sesotho language, representing a pledge to remember the most vulnerable children in the region.
Over the last eighteen years, Sentebale has developed solutions informed by children, their caregivers
and the young people the organisation serves, to address both systemic issues and individual needs of
the moment. This work includes providing and enabling the care of young people living with HIV/AIDS,
addressing mental health issues, career exploration and entrepreneurship, critical life skills and
advocacy; and offering vocational training and education opportunities. Sentebale’s work has recently
expanded into the regeneration of landscapes to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change on the
natural resources that communities rely on.
